  • OASIS EVERYWHERE  The Creation of the Self (Zoom)  When and how was the modern sense of personality and self created? This has been a topic of historical debate for quite some time. One consensus that has arisen centers on the Renaissance and Reformation as formative. What exactly took place during these time periods that gave birth to a modern sense of identity? How was the notion of individuality, in a sense, created? This class will examine these two historical epochs to answer these questions.  store.oasiseverywhere.org/ + View Classes + self

  • OASIS EVERYWHERE  American Religion in the Colonial Era (Zoom)  Religion played a pivotal role in shaping the development of American history. To understand how the balance between national law, local community practices, and individual freedom of belief evolved, it is essential to explore the religious dynamics in colonial America from 1600 to 1776. During this period, no issue was more contentious than religion, contributing to deep divisions within an already fragmented colonial system. These religious tensions not only influenced the social and political fabric of the colonies, but also laid the groundwork for the ongoing debates about freedom of belief and the role of religion in American life.   The Passion Story in the Gospel of John (Zoom)  The Passion narrative in the Gospel of John stands apart from the other Gospels in both tone and detail, emphasizing Jesus’ complete control over His death. From beginning to end, He is portrayed as sovereign, actively guiding the events leading to His crucifixion. His trial before Pilate unfolds in seven distinct scenes, underscoring the tension and significance of the moment. Unlike the other Gospels, where Jesus cries out in His final moments, John presents a more serene depiction—Jesus simply declares, “It is finished,” signifying the completion of His mission and the fulfillment of His purpose.   store.oasiseverywhere.org/ + View Classes + American Religion, Gospel of John

  • OASIS San Diego  Why Remember? Why Forget? Shifting Our Perspectives  on the Accumulation of Memories Class No. 2474 (In-Person La Mesa)   Memory affects learning, decisions, and life. Memory is essential for religions and cultures because rituals and messages are based on remembrance. Memories are not exact reproductions of the past but reconstructions of meanings. As we age, we may have the wrong expectations of what memory is for. Remembering someone’s name is not as important as remembering the meaning of our lives. Life stories and autobiographical memories, although deeply personal, have important social functions. Get new perspectives on the accumulation of memories that are part of all mature lives.  san-diego.oasisnet.org + Classes + Search 2474

We will take a look at native art, land management, social organization, medicinal practices, and much more. Who were the Celts? What kind of culture did they have? What is their legacy? This lecture will explore those questions and determine the origin of the Celts, and consider their prehistory, history, material culture, languages, and belief systems. The presentation will conclude with a look at the Celtic peoples of today, many of whom have descendants in America.  san-diego.oasisnet.org + Classes + Search 2355, 2470

  • OASIS EVERYWHERE  American Religion After Independence (Zoom)  The aftermath of American independence brought significant changes to the relationship between religion and the state, reshaping the nation’s spiritual landscape. The Second Great Awakening, a powerful wave of revivalism, transformed traditional worship practices and inspired widespread religious renewal. This movement not only invigorated established denominations but also led to the creation of uniquely American forms of religion. The period saw divisions within denominations over contentious issues like slavery, while Anglicans in America redefined themselves as Episcopalians. Together, these changes marked a pivotal era in the evolution of American religious identity.  store.oasiseverywhere.org/ + View Classes + American Religion
