One appealed to our Left Brain or logical side, another appealed to our Right Brain through story and mythos, and a third was a combination of the two. Plato realized we all learn in different ways, so created his philosophy to reach a broad range of people. How did he change into a portly bearded man with a hearty laugh and a red suit? Pagan influences provide much of the story. Be he called Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle or just plain Santa, he is beloved by children (and adults!) worldwide.  The Myth and Magic of Christmas Class No. 1162 (In-Person La Mesa)  Our modern American Christmas celebration is a multicultural blend of ancient and modern elements from all over the world. On the surface Christmas commemorates the birth of the central figure in Christianity, a Jew called Jesus of Nazareth. As this nascent religion evolved and developed it, like a snowball rolling downhill, picked up bits and pieces of every culture it encountered—Roman ritual, Germanic symbolism, Norse mythology, Dutch folk tales, British customs, American pop culture, and more. Visit an old WWII strontium mine site on an ancient volcano where celestite was mined for making flares. Gypsum and celestite were extruded through lava tubes. Then visit Elephant Tree Discovery Trail where some of these unusual trees can be located in the ABDSP area along with typical desert vegetation.
