  • OASIS San Diego  Women Philosophers of the 20th Century: Simone Weil  Class No. 2339 (In-Person Rancho Bernardo) Simone Weil (1900-1943) is considered one of the outstanding thinkers of the 20th century. Her extraordinary life and her personal contradictions make it even more so. She was born to a family of assimilated French Jews and lived her life at the edge of Christianity, but never converted. Her preoccupation with justice and human needs was not just theoretical: she worked in factories and experienced firsthand the hardships of workers. She died in England at the height of WWII basically because she refused to eat while the French were under occupation and living on limited rations. Gifted and serious, she hated being a woman and being a Jew. Her work and her personal story defy classification. Her mystical and social writings continue to be influential.  san-diego.oasisnet.org + Classes + Search 2339

  • OASIS San Diego  The Great Philosophers: Jean-Paul Sartre  Class No. 1226 (In-Person La Mesa)  At the center of the philosophy of existentialism is the work of Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) and his lifelong companion Simone de Beauvoir. Under the shadow of the Nazi occupation of Paris, Sartre and de Beauvoir carved a boldly humanistic path out of the meaningless and suffering all around them. Unmoored from systems and excuses, Sartre put human choice at the center of his work, writing that we are “condemned to be free.” We cannot escape from our freedom and it terrifies us. Join us for this study of Sartre and de Beauvoir, existentialism’s most prominent and provocative voices.   Banned Books: What’s the Big Deal?  Class No. 1425 (Online)  An increasing number of books—some of which are considered classics—are being banned in schools around the country. Have you wondered what’s behind the movement to ban books? In this class we’ll learn about some of the books being pulled from school and library bookshelves, why, and what this could mean for future generations.  san-diego.oasisnet.org + Classes + Search 1226, 1425
